CHARLES ENDERLIN

BRIEF BIO:
Charles Enderlin (Paris, 1945) is the Jerusalem Bureau Chief of France 2. He has lived in Jerusalem for decades. An expert on Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, he is the author of several books on the subject, including Shattered Dreams: The Failure of the Peace Process in the Middle East, 1995-2002. In September 30, 2000, after receiving from his cameramen Talal Abu Rahma the footage of the Netzarin junction, Enderlin, in his nightly broadcast, attributed the shots that killed Mohammad al-Dura to Israeli soldiers. The original Enderlin report lies at the beginning of the second Intifada.

INTERVIEWS/STATEMENTS

- Letter denouncing a "campaign of intimidation" against him and his family (October 2002, L'Hummanite).

- Enderlin declares that "Some people make no secret of the fact they want me sacked … Nobody has ever taken legal action against me. These people cannot stand a Franco-Israeli journalist doing his job honestly" (December 2002).

- Enderlin is awarded by the Presse Diplomatique for a documentary about the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

- In A letter to the Editor of the Atlantic Monthly Enderlin argues, "We do not transform reality. But since some parts of the scene [al-Dura's death] are unbearable, France 2 cut a few seconds from the scene, in accordance with our ethical charter" (September 2003).

- Enderlin article in Le Figaro, Non à la censure à la source in which he writes that "the image [of al-Dura] symbolized what was happening at the time not only in Gaza but also in the West Bank" (January 2005).

- Enderlin participates in a Nouvel Observateur Internet forum (February 2005) in which, when asked if he would change anything about his initial report, he declared "I think I would make the same commentary and edit the sequence the same way. With perhaps one difference. Knowing how much I'm criticized for it now, I would broadcast the few seconds of the child's death throes [agonie] that I cut thinking at the time that it made the report too painful." "
